The Haft-Seen Table: A Symbol of Nowruz
One of the most beautiful traditions of Nowruz, the Persian New Year, is the Haft-Seen table—a colorful and meaningful arrangement that welcomes the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year.
The name Haft-Seen means “Seven S’s”, referring to the seven traditional items whose Persian names begin with the letter “س” (Seen). Each item carries its own symbolism, representing wishes for a happy, healthy, and prosperous year ahead.
The traditional seven are:

🌱 Sabzeh — wheat or lentil sprouts, symbolizing rebirth and renewal

🍮 Samanu — a sweet wheat pudding, representing strength, abundance, and prosperity

But the Haft-Seen table is about much more than seven ingredients. Families often add mirrors, candles, painted eggs, coins, flowers, a Quran or poetry book, and a bowl of goldfish, each bringing its own meaning and beauty to the celebration.
Together, these elements create a table filled with color, hope, symbolism, and wishes for the year ahead.
For many Iranian families, preparing the Haft-Seen is a special moment of anticipation. The table comes together little by little, often with family members contributing, until it becomes the heart of the Nowruz celebration.
